How to Turn Your Garden into the Sanctuary of Your Dreams

It’s quite sad to think that so many people spend a lot of time inside their homes, and never venture out into their garden. Because of this, gardens are often neglected – which is a shame, since they can be used for so many things.

If done correctly, a garden can become a place for children and pets to play, or to host fun events. But we think there’s an even better use for your garden. With a little bit of time and effort, you can turn your garden into a sanctuary . . . a place where you can go to find peace and to escape the busyness of your everyday life. If that sounds like something you’d enjoy, keep reading.

Make it Green

When we think of a garden, we instantly think of plants and grass and everything green. Sure, your garden may have some other elements to it, such as a paved section, but most of it will be taken up by your grass and plants. And dead grass and plants are the opposite of relaxing.

So, your first step should be to focus on getting your grass and plants healthy and green. Don’t worry if gardening isn’t your top skill – you can make use of things like plant food or drip irrigation kits to help you achieve this.

Make it Inviting For Birds

Another aspect that makes a garden the ideal place for a peaceful sanctuary is the fact that it is in nature. Since most of us live in the city, we often don’t get to experience nature in all its glory. That’s why, if you have a garden, you should make the most of the fact that it is a natural habitat.

The sound of birds chirping can be one of the most calming sounds, especially when you’re outside in nature. Keep in mind that birds may not always fly into your garden on their own – you may need to attract them to your garden.

Water Elements

Water is one of the most calming elements there is. Think about it; the sound of a waterfall or rain is often described as being very calming. And not only is water audibly calming, but also visually. The great thing about adding some water into your garden is that there are so many possible options for you to pick from.

You can get a fountain or water feature, or you can even create a little pond. Once you’ve done that, simply enter your sanctuary and enjoy the peaceful sound of water as it relaxes you.

Wind Chimes

Once again, we will be focusing on how to create sound in your garden to help you relax. While complete silence may be ideal for a sanctuary, it is highly unlikely that you will be able to achieve that – although, that depends on where you live, of course.

For the most part, even when in your garden, you will likely be able to hear cars and other noises. Since you can’t make them stop, you can always try to create other sounds for your mind to focus on. For example, many people find the sound of wind chimes relaxing. If you’re feeling creative, you can even make your own.

Shade

Shade is an important aspect of your garden, especially if you plan on spending a lot of time outside. Naturally, you don’t want the entire garden to be shaded – you do, after all, want to be able to spend time in the sun as well.

But having a shaded section will make hot summer days outside much more bearable. You can erect an umbrella or some other kind of shade, but if you want to keep it natural, we recommend using trees for shade wherever you can. You can click here to learn about the best trees for shade.

A Bench

Most people don’t spend a lot of time in their gardens because there is nowhere for them to sit. Sitting on the grass is fine for short bursts of time, but it can get itchy and uncomfortable after a while. Luckily, there is a simple solution: simply get a bench.

You should be sure to get something that is quite durable and can withstand strong wind or rain. You can also keep some cushions in the house and just bring them outside whenever you want to sit in the garden so that you can sit there comfortably. This can be a nice spot for you to have your cup of coffee each morning.
